Tips for setting up Blackboard tests

Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind when setting up a test in your Blackboard Ultra course.

We highly recommend you first create a Practice Test in order to replicate real test/exam conditions.

For in-class/online tests on student personal devices

  1. Student-owned devices are not standardized; thus, ATS does not have a scalable solution to troubleshoot individual devices in preparation for/during online exams.

  2. To minimize issues with online exams, ATS recommends that students use a wired network connection, if possible (with an ethernet cable or in a computer lab).

  3. Using in-class/virtual Wi-Fi connection may be less successful than if you were to schedule your exam in a College computer lab.

  1. Please read Blackboard Online Quiz Tips for Students and post this file in your course to prepare students for Blackboard online testing.

  2. As instructors, review this resource on Test Settings.

  3. If possible, randomize questions to avoid students looking over at their neighbours’ screens.

  4. For Assessment Security for in-class tests, we recommend that you do not use Respondus LockDown Browser since students are using their own personal devices and WiFi, whose signal may be inconsistent during the test. Instead, if a security measure is desired, use the Access Code feature shown here: Add an Access Code to a BB test

  5. Once your Blackboard test has started, do NOT hide it from student view. Doing so will effectively stop students from being able to submit their responses.

  6. During the test, stand by checking emails/messages from your students should they need assistance.

  7. Ensure you know how to give an exception to students, if problems arise.

  8. Have an alternative assessment option handy when an issue occurs.

For tests with Respondus Lockdown Browser

  1. Carefully consider whether your test will be run through Respondus Lockdown Browser with students using their own personal devices and WiFi. This combination could increase the chance of network failure.

  2. Be sure to first create a Practice Test using Respondus Lockdown Browser to replicate real test conditions. Since students will take the Practice Test likely on their own device, post these instructions on how to download the program.

  3. Respondus LockDown Browser is available on all lab computers. There is no need for students to download the program in the labs.

For tests in computer labs

Within computer labs, all students will use the same model of computer with the same built-in image. In addition, lab computers are hard-wired; therefore, they don’t require WiFi access. This will provide a much more stable environment in which to run your Blackboard test.

Please note the following:

  1. Select only one security method when running your Blackboard tests. Choosing more than one could create conflicts during the test.

    • Blackboard Access Code

    • Respondus LockDown Browser

    • NetOps

  2. As an alternative, you can also use the NetOp Vision Pro software on the Instructor machine in the computer labs, allowing you to approve and manage various websites for use in the Blackboard test, while blocking others as needed. You will also be able to see a thumbnail of your students' computer screens from the Instructor desk to observe their progress through the test/exam.

Consult with a Learning Designer

Still having difficulty or feeling unsure about your tests? Make an appointment with a Learning Designer to review your set-up BEFORE your test goes live with students. We’ll review your settings and make recommendations to ensure your test runs smoothly.
