Managing course availability and start and end dates

Instructors have the ability to change the start/end date of their course, close the course, or complete the course.

Douglas College uses a Course ID numbering system: SUBJ-COURSE-SECTION-REG ID-TERM. Example: ACCT-3410-001-34618_ 201830 = Accounting 3410, section 001. The last six numbers indicate the year and term (e.g. 201830 = 2018, 3rd term [fall]). Please provide the Course ID when requesting help with your course, as it helps to quickly identify the course.

Course access states

Courses can have different statuses:

  • Open courses: These courses are open and ready for students to participate in. By default, all semester-based credit courses become available the first day of classes, and become unavailable a month after the last day of classes.

  • Closed: You can temporarily make your course unavailable. Students can see the course, but can’t access the content. Note that this is overridden by banner every night and it will appear available again the next day.

  • Completed courses: Students can access the content, but they can’t participate in the course.

Change course access state

You can change the state of your course via the Base Navigation or within your course.

  • Via Base Navigation: Click on Courses and navigate to your course. Click on the three dots and click Course Settings.

  • Within the course: Click on Course Settings on the top right of your course. There is a label next to your course that states the current state (ie: OPEN).

Change start and/or end date

Start and End dates for credit and non-credit courses are set in Banner. However, if you would like to modify the Start or End date of your course (e.g. open course early), you can change Course Settings in the top right of your course.

Students are NOT able to access the course until the start date.

In course settings, you can change the start and end date of your course.
